Flash Furnace ancillary works contract

Ancillary works contract for the Chuquicamata Flash Furnace: ladle enclosures, fugitive gas system piping, copper launders, baghouse filters, electrically actuated valves and installation of the VTI and VTF units. About 250 people on double shifts.

In the Flash Furnace building, LTF carried out the enclosures for the ladles that receive the molten metal and installed the piping of the fugitive gas system, with its flap valves, to capture the gases that escape during transfer. The launders through which the copper flows to the ladles were also installed.

The contract included maintenance of the baghouse filters and the electrically actuated valves, and the installation and alignment of the VTI and VTF units. About 250 people took part in the job on a double-shift system.

  1. 01

    Work on the ladle enclosures

The ladles receive the molten metal. Their enclosures were built panel by panel, with scaffolding and a forklift in the building.

  2. 02

Installation of fugitive gas system piping with flap valves

The system captures the gases that escape during metal transfer, one of the works with which smelters respond to Supreme Decree No. 28 of 2013.

  3. 03

Installation of launders for copper flow to the ladles

The launders are the channels through which copper flows to the ladles.

  4. 04

Maintenance of baghouse filters and electrically actuated valves

Baghouse filters retain the dust in the gases. Their maintenance, along with that of the electrically actuated valves, was part of the ancillary works contract.

Installation and alignment of the VTI and VTF units

The VTI and VTF units were installed and left aligned in position, as part of the Flash Furnace ancillary works contract.

    About 250 people on a double-shift system

LTF worked from its own site facilities on a double-shift system. The record includes the smelter at night and the facilities at dawn.

Site context

Since Supreme Decree No. 28 of 2013, Chilean copper smelters must capture and fix at least 95% of the sulfur and arsenic entering the process, a requirement in force since December 2018. Capturing the fugitive gases that escape in the furnace building is one of the works smelters carry out to comply with that standard.
