Fugitive gas capture in the furnace building.

Ladle enclosures, fugitive gas piping with flap valves and baghouse filter maintenance in the Chuquicamata Flash Furnace building.

Processes and equipment

The gases that escape during transfer are captured too. Ladle enclosures, piping with flap valves and baghouse filters in the Flash Furnace building.

Since Supreme Decree No. 28 of 2013, copper smelters must capture and fix at least 95% of the sulfur and arsenic entering the process, a requirement in force since December 2018. Capturing the fugitive gases that escape in the furnace building is one of the works smelters carry out to comply with that standard.

Under the Chuquicamata Flash Furnace ancillary works contract, in 2021, LTF worked on the enclosures of the ladles that receive the molten metal and installed the fugitive gas system piping, with its flap valves, to capture the gases that escape during transfer. The contract included maintenance of the baghouse filters and the electrically actuated valves, with about 250 people on double shifts.

What are fugitive gases at a smelter?

Gases that escape outside the main capture systems, for example during the transfer of molten metal to the ladles in the furnace building.

What work did LTF do on the fugitive gas system?

Installation of the system piping with flap valves, work on the ladle enclosures, and maintenance of baghouse filters and electrically actuated valves, at the Chuquicamata Flash Furnace.

Which standard requires capturing these gases?

Supreme Decree No. 28 of 2013, the emission standard for copper smelters and arsenic emission sources, which requires capturing and fixing at least 95% of the sulfur and arsenic entering the process.
