Installation and maintenance at copper smelters.

Two Codelco smelters, Chuquicamata and Potrerillos, and eleven projects on their furnaces, boilers, acid plants, casting wheels, cranes and rails.

Regions and sites

At a smelter, molten metal, process gases and work at height share the same space. That is where LTF works. Eleven projects at the Chuquicamata and Potrerillos smelters, from the boiler to the casting wheel.

Workers on the smelter outdoor walkway

Since Supreme Decree No. 28 of 2013, Chilean copper smelters must capture and fix at least 95% of the sulfur and arsenic entering the process, a requirement in force since December 2018. That translates into work on acid plants, on the capture of fugitive gases and on the equipment that recovers heat from the process.

LTF has worked on that front at the Chuquicamata smelter, with the fugitive gas system piping of the Flash Furnace, ZeCor-Z welding and acid plant maintenance, and banks and panels for the boiler. At Potrerillos, in the smelter building, it carried out maintenance of the PH cranes, rail replacement and structural erection.

What we deliver.

Every point comes from a real LTF project: each project sheet is linked below.

Gases and acid

Fugitive gas system piping with flap valves, baghouse filters and the acid plant: ZeCor-Z, catalyst and FRP.

Heat and water

Flash Furnace cooling circuits, an 18 inch line, and tube banks and panels for the boiler.

Metal and building

Ladle enclosures and launders, anode casting wheels, and the cranes and rails of the smelter building.

Which copper smelters has LTF worked at?

The Chuquicamata smelter of Codelco’s Chuquicamata Division, in Calama, and the Potrerillos smelter of the Salvador Division, in the Atacama Region.

What does Supreme Decree No. 28 require of smelters?

That they capture and fix at least 95% of the sulfur and arsenic entering the process. The requirement of the emission standard for copper smelters has been in force since December 2018.

Which LTF projects relate to that standard?

The fugitive gas system piping of the Chuquicamata Flash Furnace, which captures the gases that escape during transfer, and the maintenance of the acid plant, where the captured sulfur is converted into sulfuric acid.
