ZeCor-Z welding and acid plant maintenance

ZeCor-Z welding from 2 to 16 inches, catalyst replacement, repair of FRP equipment, and fabrication and installation of ZeCor and FRP piping at the acid plant of the Chuquicamata smelter. Workforce of 150 on double shifts.

The acid plant converts the sulfur dioxide in the smelter off-gases into sulfuric acid. Its lines handle concentrated acid and are built with special materials: ZeCor, an alloy developed to resist sulfuric acid corrosion, and FRP, fiberglass-reinforced plastic. LTF performed ZeCor-Z welding in diameters of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 inches, and fabricated and installed ZeCor and FRP piping.

Maintenance included catalyst replacement, with the catalyst removed and replaced in bulk bags like those seen in the record, and repair of FRP equipment. The project was carried out with 150 people on a double-shift system.

    Repair of FRP equipment

FRP, fiberglass-reinforced plastic, is one of the special materials the plant is built with to handle concentrated acid.

  4. 04

Fabrication and installation of ZeCor and FRP piping

The lines were fabricated and installed in ZeCor and FRP, with sections lifted by crane and installed from scaffolding.

Acid plant, Chuquicamata smelter.

Site context

Acid plants are the centerpiece of compliance with Supreme Decree No. 28 of 2013, which requires smelters to capture and fix at least 95% of the sulfur entering the process. The captured sulfur leaves the smelter as sulfuric acid, which the mining industry itself uses in its leaching processes.
