Crane rail replacement at the Chuquicamata smelter

Replacement of the crane rails in the Chuquicamata smelter building: electrical and mechanical lockout of the cranes, cutting and removal of the existing rails, and installation of the new ones with bracket welding. Workforce of 90.

The rails on which the building cranes travel carry the equipment that moves above the smelter. To replace them, LTF locked out the cranes in their electrical system and installed mechanical locks, so that none could move while the crew worked on the beam.

With the cranes secured, the existing rails were cut and removed and the new ones installed, with welding of their brackets. The work was done at height, on the building beams, with 90 people, and was recorded by drone in January 2021.

    Electrical lockout of the cranes and installation of mechanical locks

    Each crane was given a double lockout, electrical and mechanical, so that none could move while the crew worked on the beam.
