Flash Furnace cooling system

Fabrication and installation of the cooling circuits of the Chuquicamata Flash Furnace, with silver brazing, 316L stainless steel supply manifolds and 6, 8 and 10 inch lines. Workforce of 200 on rotating shifts.

The flash furnace works with water-cooled elements that protect its structure from the heat of the process. LTF fabricated and installed the circuits that feed those elements: dozens of copper lines, each with its own valve, connected to 316L stainless steel supply manifolds.

The circuit joints were made by silver brazing, and the 6, 8 and 10 inch supply systems were fabricated and installed in 316L stainless steel. Installation was completed with the furnace supply hoses, with a workforce of 200 on rotating shifts.

Fabrication and installation of 316L steel supply manifolds

The 316L stainless steel manifolds distribute the water to the circuits: each copper line connects to them through its own valve.

Fabrication and installation of 6, 8 and 10 inch supply systems in 316L stainless steel

The 6, 8 and 10 inch supply lines were fabricated and installed in the same 316L stainless steel as the manifolds.

Site context

The Flash Furnace is the heart of the Chuquicamata smelter, Codelco’s largest: around the middle of the last decade it had a smelting capacity of 1.4 million tonnes per year, with one flash furnace, two Teniente converters and three Peirce-Smith converters. Its cooling systems keep the elements surrounding the molten bath within their temperature range.
