Replacement of casting wheels 3 and 4

Complete dismantling and installation of casting wheels 3 and 4 at the Chuquicamata smelter, from the spokes, rollers and racks to the hydraulic system, take-off and weighing scales, with commissioning and calibration. Workforce of 150 on double shifts.

The casting wheel is the last step of the smelter: a carousel of molds that receives the refined copper, solidifies it into anodes and removes them for cooling. LTF fully dismantled wheels 3 and 4, with their spokes, rollers, racks, motors, gearboxes, cooling systems, take-off and weighing scales, and installed all the new components.

With the structure in place, the hydraulic system was installed and cleaned by flushing before commissioning and calibration of the components. The project was carried out with 150 workers on a double-shift system.

  2. 02

Installation of all the new components of casting wheels 3 and 4

With the wheels dismantled, all their new components were installed, with survey control in the work area.

  3. 03

Installation of the hydraulic system and flushing

With the structure in place, the hydraulic system was installed and cleaned by flushing before commissioning.

  4. 04

    Commissioning and calibration of components

The job closed with the commissioning of the wheels and the calibration of their components. They produce the anodes the electrolytic refinery needs to make cathodes.

Site context

The casting wheel is the circular structure where liquid copper solidifies in molds to form anodes, and it is divided into three zones: casting, cooling and anode take-off. On the other side of the wheel, each anode is lifted from its mold and dipped into a water tank to cool. Anodes are essential to produce cathodes in the electrolytic refinery.
