The casting wheel is the circular structure where liquid copper solidifies in molds to form anodes. It is divided into three zones, casting, cooling and anode take-off, and the anodes it produces are essential for making cathodes in the electrolytic refinery.
At the Chuquicamata smelter, LTF fully dismantled casting wheels 3 and 4, with their spokes, rollers, racks, motors, gearboxes, cooling systems, take-off and weighing scales, and installed all the new components. It then installed the hydraulic system, cleaned it by flushing and carried out commissioning and calibration, with 150 workers on double shifts. The project dates from 2021 and 2023.
