Flash Furnace and boiler cooling, 18 inch line

Removal of the old circuits and fabrication and installation of the new cooling piping system for the Flash Furnace and its boiler, with an 18 inch line and about 10,000 diameter inches, supports, painting, booster pumps and hydrostatic testing. Workforce of 250.

LTF removed the old piping circuits and fabricated and installed the new cooling system for the flash furnace and its boiler, in various diameters and with an 18 inch line. The job reached about 10,000 diameter inches, the unit used to measure piping welding work: the sum of the diameters of every welded joint.

The job included fabrication and installation of the entire support system, blasting and painting of the circuits, and installation of the booster pumps. Each circuit was delivered with its hydrostatic test. 250 workers took part on a rotating shift system.

  3. 03

Fabrication and installation of the entire support system

LTF fabricated and installed all the supports that carry the line sections.

Blasting and painting of all circuits

Blasting prepares the steel surface to receive the paint. It was applied to every circuit.

    Installation of booster pumps

The booster pumps drive the water through the new cooling system.

    Hydrostatic test of each circuit

Each circuit was delivered with its hydrostatic test: the water circuit is what keeps the boiler in service.

Chuquicamata smelter, Calama.

Site context

The Chuquicamata Flash Furnace boiler recovers heat from the process gases, and its water circuit is what keeps it in service. In November 2022 the smelter entered a 135-day major maintenance shutdown centered on that boiler, as reported by Diario Financiero. Working in that plant requires coordinating every maneuver with operations and with the Division’s shifts.
