The Flash Furnace works with water-cooled elements. LTF fabricated and installed the circuits that feed them. And the 18 inch line of the furnace and boiler cooling system, with a hydrostatic test on every circuit.
The Flash Furnace is the heart of the Chuquicamata smelter, Codelco’s largest. It works with water-cooled elements that protect its structure from the heat of the process, and with a boiler that recovers heat from the metallurgical off-gases.
LTF has carried out three projects on the furnace: fabrication and installation of its cooling circuits, with silver brazing and 316L stainless steel manifolds; the new cooling piping system for the furnace and its boiler, with an 18 inch line and about 10,000 diameter inches; and the ancillary works contract, with the ladle enclosures, fugitive gas piping, copper launders and installation of the VTI and VTF units.
Service: PipingWhat we deliver.
Every point comes from a real LTF project: each project sheet is linked below.
Cooling circuits
Dozens of copper lines, each with its own valve, joined by silver brazing to 316L steel supply manifolds, with 6, 8 and 10 inch systems.
18 inch line
Removal of the old circuits, new piping with about 10,000 diameter inches, supports, blasting and painting, booster pumps and a hydrostatic test on each circuit.
Ancillary works
Ladle enclosures, fugitive gas piping with flap valves, launders, baghouse filters, electrically actuated valves and VTI and VTF units.
The projects behind it.
Flash Furnace cooling system
Fabrication and installation of the cooling circuits of the Chuquicamata Flash Furnace, with silver brazing, 316L stainless steel supply manifolds and 6, 8 and 10 inch lines. Workforce of 200 on rotating shifts.

Flash Furnace and boiler cooling, 18 inch line
Removal of the old circuits and fabrication and installation of the new cooling piping system for the Flash Furnace and its boiler, with an 18 inch line and about 10,000 diameter inches, supports, painting, booster pumps and hydrostatic testing. Workforce of 250.

Flash Furnace ancillary works contract
Ancillary works contract for the Chuquicamata Flash Furnace: ladle enclosures, fugitive gas system piping, copper launders, baghouse filters, electrically actuated valves and installation of the VTI and VTF units. About 250 people on double shifts.

Request a proposal →What work has LTF done on the Flash Furnace?
Three projects at the Chuquicamata smelter: fabrication and installation of the furnace cooling circuits; the furnace and boiler cooling system, with an 18 inch line; and the Flash Furnace ancillary works contract.
What are diameter inches?
The unit used to measure piping welding work: the sum of the diameters of every welded joint. The Flash Furnace and boiler cooling line reached about 10,000 diameter inches.
What workforce did these projects have?
The cooling circuits, 200 people on rotating shifts; the 18 inch line, 250 workers on rotating shifts; and the ancillary works, about 250 people on double shifts.
