The sulfur that is captured leaves the smelter as sulfuric acid. The lines that carry it handle concentrated acid and are built with special materials.
The acid plant converts the sulfur dioxide in the smelter off-gases into sulfuric acid, and it is the centerpiece of compliance with Supreme Decree No. 28 of 2013. The acid it produces is used by the mining industry itself in its leaching processes.
At the acid plant of the Chuquicamata smelter, LTF performed ZeCor-Z welding in eight diameters, from 2 to 16 inches, fabricated and installed ZeCor and FRP piping, repaired FRP equipment and replaced the catalyst, which is removed and replaced in bulk bags. The job was carried out in 2021 with 150 people on double shifts.
