A new tube bank extends the service life of the boiler. That is why every serpentine coil is fabricated to drawings and every bank leaves the shop certified.
Tube banks are the heart of a boiler’s heat exchange. In the Chuquicamata Flash Furnace boiler, which recovers heat from the metallurgical off-gases, the smelter recorded an increase in tube rupture failures from 2020 onwards, and in the major shutdown of November 2022 about 50% of its heat exchange surface was replaced, as reported by Diario Financiero.
For the Chuquicamata Division, LTF fabricated convection and radiant banks, wall panels and cold and hot bends in 2020 and 2021, and in 2025 the banks of the convection section of the smelter boiler, with ASTM A192 tubes. Boiler bank No. 6, weighing about 13 tonnes and with more than 1,000 welded joints, was dispatched under escort from the Concón shop.

Verified material

Which tubes are used?
For the 2025 banks for Chuquicamata, ASTM A192 tubes: the standard for seamless carbon steel tubes for boilers and superheaters in high-pressure service.
How is a bank tested before going into service?
On the 2020 and 2021 banks and panels project, each system was closed out with a hydrostatic test and non-destructive testing: radiography, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant and visual inspection. Boiler bank No. 6 passed all quality certifications before dispatch.
