Four methods on every boiler system. Radiography, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant and visual inspection, plus the hydrostatic test.
Non-destructive testing makes it possible to check a weld or a part without damaging it. Radiography (RT) reveals internal discontinuities; magnetic particle (MT) and liquid penetrant (PT) testing detect cracks and pores at or near the surface; and visual inspection (VT) is the first check of every joint.
On the convection and radiant banks, wall panels and boiler maintenance project for the Chuquicamata Division, in 2020 and 2021, LTF closed out each system with a hydrostatic test and the four methods: radiography, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant and visual inspection. The job brought together 200 people.

Every point comes from a real LTF project: each project sheet is linked below.
Radiography (RT)
Check for internal discontinuities in the welded joints.
MT and PT
Magnetic particle and liquid penetrant testing to detect discontinuities at or near the surface.
Visual inspection (VT)
The first check of every weld.

Request a proposal →Which non-destructive tests does LTF apply?
On the Chuquicamata boiler project: radiography (RT), magnetic particle (MT), liquid penetrant (PT) and visual inspection (VT), on every system.
What is the difference between magnetic particle and liquid penetrant testing?
Magnetic particle testing applies to ferromagnetic materials and detects discontinuities at or near the surface; liquid penetrant testing detects discontinuities open to the surface and also works on non-magnetic materials.
Are they combined with other tests?
Yes. On the boiler project, each system was also closed out with a hydrostatic test.
